Who is eyelid rejuvenation for?

An eyelid lift is most commonly performed to treat aging of the upper or lower lids. As you get older, the skin of the upper eyelids can begin to droop or sag, and you may begin to experience puffiness beneath the eyes. These problems can significantly age your appearance or have you looking constantly tired or unhappy.

Upper eyelid surgery can also be used to correct congenital disorders, such as ptosis, which causes an abnormal drooping of the lid. This problem can affect one or both eyelids and can be improved with an eyelid lift.

Depending on your situation, Dr. Doyle may recommend combining your eyelid surgery with additional procedures to address signs of aging in other areas of the face. Most commonly, patients combine their eyelid lifts with a facelift or neck lift.

Questions about Eyelid Lift?

Why consider eyelid surgery 808x1024 2

The eyelid surgery procedure

Dr. Doyle is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. With years of experience in facial plastic surgery and a keen aesthetic eye, Dr. Doyle is known for providing patients with youthful and natural-looking outcomes through eyelid surgery.

During your consultation, Dr. Doyle will help determine whether you will need both upper and lower blepharoplasty, or just one of the two to achieve your aesthetic goals. To reduce the sagging of the upper eyelid, Dr. Doyle will make a small incision to trim away any excess skin and lift the eyelids for a youthful and well-rested look. Puffiness of the lower eyelids is treated by removing excess fat or tissue that is causing a puffy or swollen appearance. Excess skin may also be removed to reduce any wrinkling.

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Treatment?

Good candidates for eyelid surgery are generally healthy, prepared for a surgical procedure and recovery period, and willing to closely follow all of the pre and postoperative directions provided by our office.

The best candidates for blepharoplasty are nonsmokers. If you use a tobacco product, including e-cigarettes, you will need to quit at least six weeks before surgery. Some medications and supplements will need to be avoided in the days leading up to surgery as well. During your initial consultation, we will carefully review your medical history, assess your areas of concern, and help you determine if you are a good candidate.

What Conditions Can My Eyelid Lift Fix?

Blepharoplasty can fix:

  • Droopy Upper Lids
  • Wrinkles on Upper and Lower Lids
  • Dark, Puffy Skin Underneath the Eyes

Blepharoplasty can produce a more alert and attractive appearance to the eyes. Lifting the upper lids may also help to improve vision in some patients.

What Can be Combined With an Eyelid Lift?

Eyelid lift surgery can produce remarkable results on its own, but is also commonly combined with a forehead lift, to lift drooping eyebrows and eliminate creases from the brow, and facelift surgery, to redefine the jawline and give gentle lift to sagging facial skin.

Crow’s feet are not removed through blepharoplasty. BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are both good solutions for this issue. Hollowness underneath the eyes or in surrounding areas, such as the cheeks, may also respond well to non-surgical options, such as dermal fillers.

Everyone has different needs. The best way to learn which combination of procedures will be best for you is through a one-on-one consultation at our comfortable East Greenwich office.

What is Aftercare for an Eyelid Lift?

After your procedure, you will need to take a few days to rest. You will also need to avoid blood thinners and vasoconstrictors, and to be sure to take any medications, including eye drops and ointments, prescribed by our office. You will need to keep incisions dry and clean, and to sleep with your head elevated for the first few weeks after surgery. You will also need to avoid wearing contact lenses for around 10 to 14 days.

Recovery from eyelid surgery can take a few weeks, but most people can resume normal activities within five to seven days. During your follow-up visits, Dr. Doyle will assess your progress and help you determine when it is safe to resume more demanding tasks.

Will I Have Any Scars After My Eyelid Rejuvenation?

Incisions for eyelid lift are carefully placed in the natural folds of your eyes. The care you take of your incisions following surgery will play a direct role in how they heal.

You can help to prevent visible scarring by avoiding all products with nicotine, not using blood thinners, and keeping your incisions dry and clean.

When cared for properly, your eyelid lift incisions should become unnoticeable within six months to a year.

Eyelid lift recovery and results

Upon the completion of your eyelid surgery, you can return home that same day under the care of a loved one. Driving yourself is not an option at this time due to the effects of the general anesthesia, and you should plan on resting your eyes.

Bruising and swelling around your eyelids is to be expected, but will gradually fade over the next couple of weeks. After this time, you should feel well enough to work and perform other daily activities. Your exact eyelid surgery recovery time will vary depending on the extent of your procedure and on whether you underwent both upper and lower blepharoplasty.

Just weeks after your surgery, you will see a significant improvement in the appearance of your eyes when you look in the mirror. Many patients are able to remove several years off their appearance and feel more confident and comfortable interacting with their peers. Dr. Doyle’s goal is to provide patients with natural-looking results. Others will wonder how you look so good for your age—without knowing you had any help.
