Many women feel that the state of their breasts is a reflection of their femininity. Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that aims to enhance, enlarge, or restore the appearance of your breasts using silicone or saline breast implants. This breast surgery is one of the most popular options at the Centre for Aesthetic + Reconstructive Surgery.

Whether you have always struggled with the natural appearance of your breasts or are unhappy with changes that have occurred with age or pregnancy, breast augmentation can be customized to suit your individual needs. Each woman has her own unique goals, so Dr. Andrea Doyle takes the time necessary to personalize every surgery she performs to achieve natural-looking and breath-taking outcomes.

Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Andrea Doyle, is recognized as one of the premier breast surgeons in the Providence, Rhode Island area. Her feminine eye and surgical skill give her the tools necessary to help you reach the shape, size, and proportionate figure you desire.

If you are interested in breast augmentation, please contact Dr. Doyle in East Greenwich today at  401.336.3770 to schedule your one-on-one consultation. The breast augmentation preparation, procedure, and recovery have many steps and choices involved, so we have compiled this resource page to guide patients through the process.

Is Breast Augmentation Right for Me?

Breast augmentation patients vary in age and cosmetic goals—from young women who have low self-confidence due to the size of their breasts to mothers wanting to restore their pre-pregnancy appearance. This procedure may be the perfect fit for you, or you may reach better results through a breast lift or a combination of the two. Dr. Doyle will listen to your goals and walk you through the various options you have for breast surgery during your in-depth consultation.

You have several options for breast augmentation, including the breast implant type, placement, incision locations, size, and shape. The best choice will vary for each woman based on your unique figure, the current state of your breasts, your age, and your aesthetic goals. Dr. Doyle will help you determine which of those options are right for you and whether a breast lift will also be necessary to address drooping or sagging.

Once you and Dr. Doyle have developed a personalized approach for your breast augmentation, we can schedule your surgery for a date and time that works best for you.

Breast Implant Types

At the Centre for Aesthetic + Reconstructive Surgery, we offer saline and silicone breast implants. Saline breast implants are FDA approved for women who are at least 18 years old and silicone for those ages 22 and older. The saline option involves a silicone shell that is placed in the breasts and then filled with saline (saltwater) to the desired size. Silicone breast implants have more range—the typical option involves a silicone shell that is pre-filled with a silicone gel. Each type of implant has its benefits and drawbacks, which is another reason why your breast augmentation should be customized to fit your needs.

Dr. Doyle offers a full range of breast implants, including round or shaped silicone gel implants.  The silicone gel implant involves a highly cohesive gel and partitions. This option comes with several advantages: they are more likely to hold shape and less likely to have visible rippling, to leak, require revision surgery, or develop scar tissue.

What Are the Benefits of Sientra® Breast Implants?

Often referred to as “gummy bear implants,” Sientra® breast implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes, including round and oval. Additionally, the state-of-the-art Sientra® implants offer smooth or textured surfaces, as well as different degrees of projection based on your individual desires.

Apart from multiple style options, Sientra® implants can be considered advantageous over traditional silicone and saline breast implants for a number of other reasons. Some common benefits include:

Aesthetics – They are designed to have a more natural look and feel

Durability – They are more resistant to breaks, wrinkles, and folds

Exclusivity – Only board-certified plastic surgeons can use Sientra® implants

Safety – In the rare occurrence of a rupture, the silicone gel center should not leak through the implant’s outer shell

Sientra® breast implants are not guaranteed lifetime devices and may require a breast implant exchange.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Sientra® Breast Implants?

You may be a good candidate for Sientra® breast implants if you are at least 22 years old, in good health, and expect realistic results from your breast augmentation or enhancement surgery.

Sientra® cohesive gel breast implants are not recommended for women who currently have:

  • Untreated breast cancer or pre-malignant breast disorders
  • Active infection(s)
  • Weakened immune systems

Breast Implant Placement and Incision Sites

Breast augmentation patients at the Centre for Aesthetic + Reconstructive Surgery have choices when it comes to the placement and incision site used during the procedure. Breast implants are typically placed over (subglandular) or under (submuscular) the pectoral muscle, which depends on the type of implant. Women with minimal breast tissue and thin skin often have submuscular implant placement because of the risk of visible rippling, wrinkling, or implant edges. That is particularly the case with saline breast implants because of the fluid nature of the implant filling. Dr. Doyle will discuss subglandular vs. submuscular placement with you during your consultation.

There are also incision site options. The inframammary incision is made in the crease beneath the breasts and offers maximum access for precise placement. Inframammary is the most common approach, but the peri-areolar incision site is often best when a breast lift and breast augmentation are performed at once. The peri-areolar incision is crescent-shaped and made in the darker pigment of the areolas (nipples) to conceal scarring. Another incision site option is the transaxillary incision which is made in the pit of your arm and may be used to insert saline breast implants that are filled once in place.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure

Your breast augmentation will require general anesthesia, which means you will be asleep during the surgery. Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure, so you will be able to return home the same day. Dr. Doyle will make the chosen incisions and place your silicone or saline breast implants. Once the implants are secured in the correct position, she will close the incision and apply the necessary dressings. A friend or family member will need to be available to help you get home, and through the first 24-48 hours of recovery.

The exact steps of your breast augmentation surgery will vary based on what you discuss with Dr. Doyle during your consultation.

Recovering from Breast Augmentation

Dr. Doyle will go over your post-operative instructions during your consult and before your breast augmentation procedure. That includes specific medications to take orally or apply topically to reduce infection risk. Follow her directions and reach out right away with any questions or concerns during recovery.

Most patients can return to work within several days, but you must limit your daily activities for the first 2-3 weeks. You may increase your activity level gradually. You will likely need to wear a specialized surgical bra or compression garment for the first few weeks. Bruising and swelling are normal after surgery but will fade over time.

When Will I See My Breast Augmentation Results?

You will notice an immediate change in breast size and shape. However, it will take some time before you will see the final results of your surgery to allow bruising and swelling to dissipate and reveal your new bust. Each breast enhancement Dr. Doyle performs is designed to provide results that feel as natural to your figure as if they had been a part of your body all along. Breast augmentation is an excellent way to achieve the feminine curves you have always pictured yourself having, so you can feel confident and sexy.

Breast Implant Revision Surgery

Breast implant revision surgery is designed for women who have undergone breast augmentation and need or want to have their existing implants removed or replaced. There are two main reasons for revision surgery: You need to have one or both implants removed/replaced due to complications. Or, you want to remove/replace your implants for personal reasons such as changing size, shape, and material.

Breast implants are not meant to last forever and may need to be removed or replaced at some point. Complications including a rupture, leak, or capsular contracture, require implant removal or replacement as soon as possible. As you age, your body continues to change. Many women want revision surgery to improve results or restore a proportionate figure.

The implant revision procedure is performed similarly to breast augmentation. Dr. Doyle will likely use the same incisions from the original breast surgery to minimize new scarring. Your existing implant(s) are removed. Dr. Doyle then assesses and diagnoses any problems that occurred with the breast implant. If you experienced capsular contracture, our board-certified plastic surgeon would remove the overgrowth of scar tissue that built up around the implant. If you are replacing your implants, Dr. Doyle then inserts the new shells, closes the incisions, and applies necessary dressings.
