Arm Lift in East Greenwich

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure that reshapes the under portion of the arm, from the underarm region to the elbow. Ideal for women and men whose triceps are obscured by loose, flabby, sagging skin, arm lift surgery can increase comfort, improve clothing options, and help produce a better defined upper arm.

Often performed alone, this procedure may be included in post-weight loss body lift and mommy makeover procedures as well.

If you are unhappy with the appearance of your arms, brachioplasty may be among the safest and most effective options for creating optimal contours. Please call the Center for Aesthetic & Reconstructive Surgery at  401.336.3770 to schedule a consultation today. We serve East Greenwich and all surrounding areas of Rhode Island.

Arm Lift Candidates

Arm lift surgery is performed to:

  • Reduce excess sagging skin
  • Reduce stubborn pockets of fat
  • Tighten and smooth underlying supportive tissue
  • Define the shape of the upper arm

The best candidates for this procedure are nonsmokers who are in good health and are prepared for a surgical procedure. Arm lift surgery requires a recovery period during which some activities will need to be limited. The best candidates are able to take this time to relax and heal.

Good candidates will also need to have realistic expectations. Arm lift surgery can trim and tone the upper arms, but it may not create the exact look you want. During your initial consultation, we will listen to your concerns, assess the amount of skin and fat that will need to be removed, and provide honest information about what you can expect from your procedure.

The Arm Lift Procedure

During arm lift surgery, excess skin and stubborn fat are removed from the upper arm. There are several incision options to accomplish this. The best one for your needs will be dependent on the amount of skin and fat that is being removed.

Fat is removed using liposuction. Board-certified Rhode Island plastic surgeon Dr. Andrea Doyle utilizes advanced liposuction techniques to produce reliable results while minimizing trauma to surrounding tissue. Once the fat has been eliminated and underlying tissue has been lifted and smoothed, the overlying skin is tightened to bring the arm into ideal proportions.

Arm Lift Recovery

Recovery from an arm lift can take six to eight weeks. There will be restrictions on your activities for the first two weeks, but most people are able to resume working within seven to fourteen days. Aerobic exercise and weight training should be avoided for at least six weeks and not resumed until you have been given the go-ahead by Dr. Doyle.

It is important during recovery that you maintain all follow-up visits and carefully follow all post-operative directions. It is during your follow-up visits that Dr. Doyle can determine if you are ready to resume more demanding activities.

You may need to wear a compression garment and adopt recovery habits, such as proper diet and gentle exercise, that can help reduce swelling, improve blood flow, and make recovery much more rewarding. These things will be discussed in greater detail during your initial consultation.

Maintaining Your Results

Excess skin and fat on the upper arms are often a result of weight gain as we age. The condition can be heightened by a lack of exercise targeting the muscles on the upper arm.

After fat has been removed and skin tightened, it will be important that you take steps to maintain your results. This will include proper diet and exercise, including weight training and cardio, which can also be used to enhance results if you desire. If you have traditionally struggled with food choices and are not certain which exercises will be best, it can be very helpful to work with a nutritionist and personal trainer to develop a plan that will work for you.

Arm lift surgery is as permanent as you make it. Your actions will play a direct role in the final and lasting appearance of your procedure.
