Recovery from male breast reduction may take up to six weeks. During this time, it is important that you continue to follow all of the pre and postoperative directions provided by our office to help prevent complications and unsatisfactory results. Keeping your incisions dry and clean, minimizing activities, and giving yourself time to rest will all help to speed the recovery process, helping you return to “normal” in the fastest and most comfortable manner possible.
Will There be Pain?
Some swelling, bruising, and discomfort can be expected in the first days following male breast reduction surgery. Compression garments, daily walks, and the use of certain medications can help to address these issues and assist in producing optimal comfort during these first few days.
Most men are able to resume working in non-strenuous occupations within five to seven days. If your job requires heavy lifting or other activities that could separate incisions or irritate the surgical area, you will need to wait until you are given the okay by Dr. Doyle to resume duties. During your follow-up visits, Dr. Doyle will assess your progress and help you determine when it is safe to begin more demanding work responsibilities.
Weight lifting and progressive exercises will need to be avoided for four to six weeks. This helps to prevent certain complications and allows the body plenty of time to heal before demands are placed on the muscles. With effort, you will be able to enhance your results through targeted exercises, but these will need to wait until you have fully recovered.
