Dr. Andrea Doyle performs the tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) at her Rhode Island plastic surgery practice to help patients struggling with loose and/or sagging skin achieve a flat and well-toned abdomen. This common problem can occur following a large amount of weight loss, or after a pregnancy, or simply due to the natural effects of aging. Dr. Doyle’s tummy tuck surgery is designed to help restore a slim and firm contouring of the midsection while helping her patients feel more confident about their bodies.
Who is tummy tuck surgery for?
The most important thing to realize about the tummy tuck is that it is not a weight loss or fat reduction procedure. This surgery is designed for those who have lost a significant amount of weight or for women who have undergone pregnancy and who now have loose areas of skin or outstretched abdominal muscles. As skin becomes stretched over time, it often lacks the elasticity to tighten up once the body reverts to a smaller size. The tummy tuck addresses this issue to help refine the contours of the midsection and achieve a well-toned physique.
During your consultation, Dr. Doyle will take a look at your condition to determine the best approach for your tummy tuck surgery. She may recommend a full or mini tummy tuck depending on the severity and location of the loose skin and whether the abdominal muscles will also need to be addressed. If you are also struggling with some stubborn fat in the midsection area, Dr. Doyle can perform liposuction to further enhance your results.
The tummy tuck procedure
Dr. Doyle is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has years of experience achieving smooth, natural-looking tummy tuck results.
The exact steps of your tummy tuck procedure may vary based on your unique condition and goals. and will be discussed during your consultation. Dr. Doyle will begin your surgery by making a horizontal incision a few inches below the belly button and extending from about hipbone to hipbone (a mini tummy tuck requires a smaller incision, but is for correcting less-severe skin laxity). From this incision, Dr. Doyle can remove any excess tissue and repair the underlying muscles, as needed, to create a firmer, stronger core. The skin is then pulled tight to achieve a natural-looking smoothness, and the excess is carefully trimmed away to improve skin elasticity. Dr. Doyle will then close your incisions and place the necessary dressings and drains to assist with the tummy tuck healing process.
Tummy tuck recovery and results
Tummy tuck surgery will require some recovery time, but you will be able to return home on the day of your surgery under the care of a loved one. Due to the effects of the general anesthesia, it will be a few days before it is safe for you to drive.
You will immediately notice a slimmer shape of your abdomen, but will need to wear the required surgical dressings and compression garment for the following weeks as your skin heals. There will be some swelling, bruising, and redness of the abdomen, which will gradually fade over the next few months. Dr. Doyle recommends that you be prepared to take at least two weeks off from work as you recover from your tummy tuck. Higher levels of activity and exercise should be avoided for about one and a half months, or until you feel well enough.
After about 2-3 months, most of the visible signs of surgery will have faded, and you will be able to see the majority of your final results in the mirror. Dr. Doyle’s patients are often overjoyed when they see their new body without the embarrassing excess skin. We encourage our patients to try on all of their favorite clothes and go for those outfits they were too shy to wear before. The tummy tuck is one of the more transformative procedures, and we love seeing the positive impact it has had on the lives of our patients. With a continued healthy lifestyle, you can enjoy the results of your tummy tuck for many years to come.
